YouTube Special Edition: WorkSafeBC

In Safety Cat's first post on the OH&S Wire, he provided valuable information about YouTube's top five government safety channels, and probably saved a few hundred hairless hides in the process [that's low-balling it, in his opinion]. But alas, one commenter [the jury is still out on whether it was a fellow feline or an unusually astute human] pointed out that he had forgotten to include the 'best one' [commenter's words not Safety Cat's]: WorkSafeBC.

Well, fear not, Safety Cat has not forgotten. In fact, it's been making him lose sleep... not really, sleep is too important.

Regardless, here is a brief profile of WorkSafeBC's YouTube Channel. You're welcome in advance, bipeds.

WorkSafeBC is a Canadian organization [hence, BC at the end]dedicated to promoting workplace health and safety for the workers and employers of British Columbia. It consults with and educates employers and workers and monitor compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

The following video talks about how a spotter in blind conditions was struck by a grapple, which looks like the giant, metallic version of that taratula Safety Cat was stalking the other day until he realized it was same spider that almost blinded his outdoor friend, Obi. He then proceeded to slowly back away and hide until his Human came home to terminate it.

Anyway, grapple=tarantula and tarantula=blindness, therefore grapple=blindness, or something. Moral of the story: Make sure there are no other humans around when throwing a grapple!

Taber the Airtoons Pilot: Saving Humans from Boring Airline Safety Cards Since 1999

Morning, humans.
Safety Cat has once again produced an amazingly humorous blog post for The OH&S Wire.
Here is an excerpt of Safety Cat's Pulitzer-worthy interview with Taber, the human behind Airtoons.com. Tune in on Thursday for the full version.

Q. When did you decide it was your humanly duty to add letters to these safety pictures?

I decided I had to do something about these safety pictures during my collegiate years back in good ole 1999. I believe I was a junior at Syracuse University and I had a safety card laying around my desk for a few months or so that I planned to eventually use for inspiration on my personal Web site.

After scanning it and looking through the panels, I discovered a couple of things each one had in common: 1) There were no captions on them, and 2) Some of them were drawn so weird. I mean like weird: A cowboy-looking dude in full-on chaps about to hop out into the water; this guy in a purple tuxedo with a top hat to complete the look, gracefully cantering for the exit; and this guy who seems to be eating licorice while floating around in the water. So between classes one day I threw a caption on Mr. Licorice and a few others and showed them to some of my friends. The taller friend said I should make a Web site for them. I agreed that I should dutifully inform others about the "true" meaning of the cards, came up with a name for them and made a quick-and-dirty site to house them.

Q. Why did you decide to do it?

Oh man, are you even listening to me Safety Cat? Put down your ball of yarn [but it's so bouncy!], I just answered that! My tall friend said I should make a Web site to house them, and I figured he was right. It would be fun to make a simple site and share the truth for all to see. Airtoons.com wasn't taken, so I quickly snatched that up.

Stay tuned for more Airline Safety Illustrations from Taber's site.

A Letter to His Hairless, Two-Legged Simians

Dear Humans,

While taking one of his hourly, 15-minute naps, Safety Cat had an epiphany: He realized that despite his efforts at enlightening your hairless hides about safety with his bi-weekly-ish posts on the
OH&S Wire, he was not doing enough to keep you humans from destroying yourselves.

So Safety Cat is introducing Safety Cat, Safety Scat, a blog aimed at helping you overcome your humanly flaws. 'Helping' may include but is not limited to: posting YouTube safety videos; improving your chances of survival through the use of 'common sense' and 'thinking before acting'; showing you some funny safety stuff, so you will be too distracted to leave the house, and therefore, put yourself in danger; and occasionally ranting about safety and non-safety things alike.

So sit back, relax and strap on a fall protection harness if you're going to dangle 500 ft. in the air.

Until next time, meow.
